Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at Butterfield Charter High School Independent Study program. The mission of our WASC Accredited, Independent Study program is to create 21st century learners, who are prepared for life after high school through personalized, student-centered instruction that is focused on adaptability, responsibility, ethical behaviors and self-management.
We are committed to making academics both personal and relevant for each student. We have incorporated online and blended learning, while maximizing time with teachers who foster students’ academic and personal growth.
Students at BCHS complete courses independently, outside the classroom setting and under the supervision of a credentialed teacher. Work is completed using textbooks, the Internet, research outside of school and projects. Students attend weekly class appointments with their assigned teacher to assess their learning and to turn in their completed assigned work. With a flexible schedule, students have the ability to complete credits toward graduation while working, attending college, or volunteering in the community. BCHS has five satellite sites in the following communities to ensure we are reaching all students: Tule River Indian Reservation, Strathmore, Terra Bella, Woodville, and Porterville Developmental Center.
Students also have the opportunity to choose seat-based classes to meet their learning needs. Students have the opportunity to engage in a "college-like" experience in our seat-based program with small class sizes.
BCHS is offers articulated college classes through Porterville College in which students have the opportunity to earn college credit and elective credit on the Butterfield site. BCHS also offers an art course and additional tutoring for students.
If you have any questions regarding BCHS, please feel free to contact us. The faculty, staff and I are honored to work with Independent Study students and parents and look forward to an exciting school year.
